J. van Kralingen made this print titled 'Two Dwarves for the Month of November' around 1720. The print presents two stout figures dressed as hunters, but they are identified as dwarves, suggesting that the artist is using their image to say something about social class. It would be interesting to look into the Dutch society of this time and place to understand what might have been on the artist's mind. Is this artwork self-consciously conservative or progressive? Does it critique the institutions of art? It might be useful to check other prints, drawings and publications to get more information about how the artist relates to any artistic movements that were around at that time. If we examine the imagery alongside an understanding of the society and culture of the time we can more fully understand its cultural significance.
