This black and white photograph shows the Frontgebouwen van de Technische School te Bandoeng, and was made by an anonymous artist at an unknown date. It's a study in light and texture, isn’t it? The artist really plays with different shades of grey, creating depth and contrast. I'm drawn to the rough texture of the brickwork that makes up the lower part of the school building. You can almost feel the individual stones beneath your fingers. The way the artist captured the light reflecting off each stone is so interesting. Look at how the light catches the edges of the roof tiles, creating a rhythmic pattern. It reminds me of Agnes Martin's subtle grids, or maybe Bernd and Hilla Becher's typologies. The artist here seems interested in recording information, but there’s also this formal quality, this beauty in the everyday. It’s like they're saying, "Here's a school building, but it's also a study in light, texture, and form." It's a gentle reminder that art can be found in the most unexpected places.
