This photo, "Bouw van de nieuwe brug over de Woih ni Tanggo Besi," is by an anonymous artist. The way the light falls, almost uniformly, across the scene speaks to me of an artmaking process rooted in observation. There's a real physicality to the scene; you can almost feel the dust of the construction site and the humidity hanging in the air. The bridge itself, rendered in a straightforward manner, becomes a metaphor for connection and progress. But look closer, and you'll notice that the composition is slightly off-kilter. The artist has captured something in-between, a pause, a breath. This piece reminds me a little of the Bechers’ industrial landscapes, but with a more human touch. It captures the human endeavour while hinting at the beauty and strangeness of nature reclaiming the construction site. It’s this ambiguity that makes the photograph so compelling.
