Suzanne Roy made this drawing of a cake mold, using colored pencil on paper. The soft, precise marks that describe the fluted metal are so beautiful; it’s clear that Suzanne saw drawing as a kind of slow, meditative process. Look at how the texture of the metal is built up through layers of hatching. The color shifts so subtly, suggesting the play of light on the object. The pencil work makes it look like you could almost reach out and touch it. There's a certain warmth there that only the human hand can conjure. This reminds me of the drawings of Morandi, who also seemed to find endless inspiration in the humble objects that surrounded him. It makes you think about art as a way of slowing down and really looking at the world. The point isn't to get the cake mold *exactly* right, but to see all the possibilities it holds.
