"De mens op vijftigjarige leeftijd" (Man at the Age of Fifty) is a 16th-century engraving by Gerard van Groeningen. The work depicts an older man counting coins at a table, surrounded by ornate furniture and objects, including a chalice and a book. The engraving is framed with an elaborate border featuring fruit, flowers, and a mythical creature. The inscription at the bottom of the image includes the Latin phrase “Conversis studiis, atas animusque virilis / Querit opes, aurum plus pietate colit,” which translates to “With his studies changed, his mind and manhood seek wealth, gold more than piety.” This artwork, now housed in the Rijksmuseum, offers a glimpse into the values and societal preoccupations of 16th-century Europe.
