This is an image from Sigismundus Latomus's "Schön newes Modelbuch," a model book created around the early 17th century. Notice how the stark contrast of black ink against the parchment immediately commands our attention, evoking a sense of graphic clarity and precision. The page is compartmentalized into geometric fields. Each presents a unique pattern, a dense interplay of lines, circles, and angular shapes which invites us to explore the underlying structure of ornamental design. The patterns exhibit a structured repetition which offers an early engagement with seriality. But at the same time, there are subtle variations. Latomus's work acts as a visual codex, a semiotic system where each pattern functions as a signifier. The Modelbuch transcends its utilitarian purpose, engaging with broader philosophical inquiries into the nature of beauty, order, and the human impulse to create and replicate patterns.
