Ohara Koson made this print of a Kingfisher perched on a tree stump, probably in the 1920s. Look how Koson has balanced detail and simplicity. There’s a focus on surface, but a surface that feels incredibly light and airy. The colours are muted, mostly greys and greens, and the details are sharp yet delicate. Notice the wood grain of the tree stump, how tactile it looks. And how this texture contrasts with the soft, hazy background, where the plants drift. It reminds me of those moments in painting when you realize the background is as important as the subject. The kingfisher itself is a burst of colour, a focal point that draws your eye, but the artist manages to avoid making it pop out too much, creating a sense of harmony. Artists like James McNeill Whistler spring to mind, he also managed to find a similar balance between atmosphere and detail. Art's just a giant conversation across time, don't you think?
