Richard Diebenkorn made this untitled drawing of a nude, with ink on paper. You can see a searching line, where he’s trying to find the form, correct it, and clarify it – that’s drawing as a process. There's a kind of vulnerability in the piece, especially in how the figure is drawn with these bold lines, but also these ghostly, lighter blue lines underneath, like a pentimento. It makes you wonder about the artist's touch, his way of both defining and questioning the form. The thick, dark lines create a boundary around the figure, but the lighter marks seem to suggest movement, adjustments, like the artist is working to capture a fleeting moment, or trying to resolve uncertainty. It reminds me a bit of Matisse's line drawings, where simplicity and expression meet in a single stroke. Ultimately, the drawing feels like a conversation. Between the artist and the subject, the visible and the invisible, and the viewer and the work. It's not about perfection but about the energy of looking and trying to understand.
