Izaak Leendert Bedding made this black ink drawing on paper of a winged girl visiting a boy in a cornfield. Look at the sharp lines used to depict the corn stalks and the delicate shading of the girl’s butterfly wings! It feels like Bedding worked meticulously, perhaps losing himself in the details of this whimsical scene. I can almost feel the scratch of the pen on the paper, each stroke building up this little world. I wonder if Bedding was thinking about folk tales or fairy stories when he made this piece. Maybe he was imagining a secret encounter in a hidden place. I love how the girl seems to float above the cornfield, like a dream made real. It reminds me that artists are always in conversation with each other across time, sharing ideas and inspiring new ways of seeing. This drawing is less about fixed meaning and more about opening up a space for imagination and wonder.
