Daniel Dezeuze created "Petite echelles pour vent d'Ouest" as part of the Supports/Surfaces group in France, active from 1966-1972, in a time of political upheaval and social change. These four "little ladders for the west wind" use simple materials--painted wood and a clear plastic backing-- to explore the essence of art. Emerging from a period of intense questioning, the work rejects traditional artistic values. Think of this piece as an embodiment of its time, a reflection of the desire to break free from established norms and create something radically new. With its emphasis on basic components, Dezeuze prompts us to rethink what we expect from art. By drawing attention to the materials and construction, the work evokes an emotional connection to the simplicity and potential of everyday objects. It serves as a powerful reminder that even the most humble materials can be transformed into something meaningful.
