Kmetty János made this painting, Table Still Life with Newspaper, with watercolor. Look at how János lets the brush dance across the paper, each stroke light and full of air. I love how the colors are so transparent, like memories layered on top of each other. You can see the ghost of the paper showing through. Those reds and oranges in the fruit are so juicy. There's a real sense of movement, of things slightly off-kilter, like life itself. Notice how the newspaper's angular shapes contrast with the softer forms of the fruit and bottles, creating a playful tension. For me, this piece evokes the watercolors of Cezanne, especially in the way both artists use translucent washes to build form and space. This painting is about looking, seeing, feeling, and finding new ways to experience the world.
