Curatorial notes

This photograph of Tunnel Bathing Beach at high tide, by Phillipse & Lees, makes me think about the joy and labour of looking. It's all about the interplay of light and shadow, rendered in grayscale. The texture is incredible, you can almost feel the roughness of the rocks, and the way the light catches the waves. I find myself drawn to the upper right corner where you can see the crowd looking out to the sea. The photograph reminds me of how painting can be both representational and abstract, that art is an ongoing conversation and exchange of ideas across time. Like life, art embraces ambiguity and multiple interpretations over fixed meanings.
