This print titled ‘Opdragt aen de leerzame jeugd’ was created by Glenisson & Zonen, and it presents a grid-like composition filled with small, colourful vignettes. The visual field is organised into a series of scenes, each one presenting figures in rudimentary landscapes. The limited palette emphasises flat expanses of red, green and yellow which gives the print a graphic quality. Each scene is a self-contained unit, yet their arrangement creates an overall sense of patterned rhythm. The eye is drawn across the surface, decoding each image as a sign within a larger semiotic structure. There is a destabilization of traditional perspective and depth; space is flattened, and figures are rendered with minimal detail. The absence of strong tonal variation also challenges conventional notions of form and volume. The print functions as a system of visual signs, inviting the viewer to engage in an active process of interpretation. The visual order reflects the underlying structure of language and knowledge, inviting us to consider how meaning is constructed through systems of representation.
