Louise Wilhelmina van der Meulen-Nulle’s lace pattern design featuring golden shower branches and blossoms, was rendered with ink on paper. It’s a drawing, a plan, a shadow of something that hasn't yet come into being. This design is all about process. You can see how the artist worked through the shapes, marking the paper with tiny dots to guide the lace maker. The leaves are like empty vessels, waiting to be filled with intricate threadwork. And the color! That pale green paper, it's so delicate, so unassuming, you can almost smell the old paper smell. Look at the tiny leaves on the right, each with its own little constellation of dots and lines. It’s a microcosm, a whole world contained in a tiny space. This reminds me of the drawings of Hilma af Klint, where abstract forms become portals to other dimensions. Art is not just a thing, it is a verb. It's a conversation that spans centuries, a dance of ideas that never ends.
