Reijer Stolk made this drawing of dogs with pencil on paper, but we don't know exactly when. The lines here are so light, ghostly. Like he was trying to catch something fleeting. He doesn’t want to cage the dog. I know that feeling, of wanting to preserve something without pinning it down. The lines are so delicate, like he barely touched the paper. And yet, they capture so much. It’s interesting that they are drawn one on top of another. Almost like the artist is trying to understand the nature of 'dogness' itself. Or is it a study of memory and the layering of time? Like dogs that came before and what we expect of dogs? All wrapped into one. It's an exploration, a conversation between eye, hand, and… dog! Artists, we're all just trying to figure stuff out, one line at a time.
