This lead medal, "Calisto, door Juno bestraft", was created by Paulus Willemsz. van Vianen in the early 17th century. The circular form, densely packed with figures, foliage, and varied textures, draws us into a scene of mythological drama. Juno, the queen of the gods, is depicted mid-gesture, seemingly casting a spell, while Calisto reclines, vulnerable and exposed. Van Vianen masterfully uses the medium's plasticity to create depth and movement. Notice how the high relief of the figures contrasts with the shallower background, creating a sense of spatial recession. The surface is highly articulated, with textures ranging from the smooth skin of the figures to the rough bark of the trees. This emphasis on materiality draws attention to the medal as an object, not just a representation. The composition is organized around a dynamic diagonal axis, further activating the space and drawing the viewer's eye across the scene. This formal device serves to heighten the emotional tension inherent in the narrative, inviting us to contemplate themes of power, transformation, and divine retribution.
