Do you see the figures at the foot of the cross? They seem to be sinking into the earth itself, swallowed up by their grief. Editor: That's a great point about vulnerability! The other figures are drawn very intimately...Was it typical to portray religious scenes with this much...raw emotion at this time? Curator: You know, what strikes me is how unconventional it actually is! Bloch, despite working within a religious framework, manages to tap into a universal sense of suffering. It’s intimate, as you noted, and almost painfully human. I think that's what makes it so powerful, even now. It dares to imagine, in raw terms, what such a devastating event would mean, how it would *feel*. Editor: That resonates a lot! It's much more personal than I initially gave it credit for. I was so focused on the composition that I missed the individual feeling. Curator: Precisely. Art does that, doesn’t it? It brings us back to asking, in what ways can we accept the burden of loneliness or anguish? Are these expressions inherently beautiful?
