Curatorial notes

Daria Theodora, a 20th-century artist, created this drawing, titled “Ambivalence”. The overall impression is one of ornate beauty, where a figure is encircled by a profusion of floral and faerie-like elements. The composition is dense, with many details competing for our attention. The artist arranges a central portrait within an oval format. Its tight structure is disrupted by the tension between organic and ethereal elements, and the figure's gaze, downcast, pulls the viewer into a space of introspection and uncertainty. This creates a semiotic interplay between the outer beauty and inner turmoil. The use of color in the artwork is striking, predominantly warm reds and golds. The artist’s mark-making challenges fixed categories, inviting the viewer to explore a space where beauty and melancholy coexist, reflecting art’s capacity to destabilize our understanding and engage us in perpetual interpretation.
