This is the Metalen Kruis 1830-1831, a medal made by an anonymous artist. The eye is immediately drawn to the cross shape and the warm brown color, which gives it a sense of historical depth and solemnity. The medal employs symmetry to create a visual order which evokes stability and strength. The design incorporates geometric forms, specifically, the Maltese cross. Its shape is a symbolic nod to bravery and military honor. Within the center of the cross, a prominent "W" is displayed, which is crowned and encircled by a wreath. These signs communicate themes of victory and allegiance. The artist’s choice of metal is particularly important, with its inherent qualities of durability and resistance symbolizing perseverance. The circular ring at the top disrupts the firm lines of the cross, inviting contemplation about the balance between formality and fluidity. This medal functions as a cultural artifact which captures a moment of history and continues to invite discourse.
