The woman's ornate dress and relaxed posture within a domestic interior suggest a certain class and leisure, yet perhaps also constraints placed upon women during that era. What do you make of the rocking chair? Editor: It seems to suggest a cyclical nature of life, of comfort and perhaps even confinement. The objects on the mantelpiece behind her feel symbolic too.
