'Family of Bird Catchers' by Joan Miró – what a delicious dance of shapes and colours! I can almost see Miró in his studio, playfully moving between figures, the pure red, yellow and blue, and spontaneous gestures of black ink. I wonder what it was like for him, creating this world of signs and symbols. Look how the stark black lines create these mysterious characters and forms, and those primary colors pop against the off-white ground. It’s a party! Miró used color and form as a language. I’m drawn to the red circle face set against a blue rectangle – it’s so simple, yet so full of expression! Miró’s work reminds me of Paul Klee and other surrealists who were digging into the unconscious, but with such unique energy and a light touch. Artists like Miró show us that painting is more than representation. It's an embodied conversation, embracing ambiguity and inspiring new ways of seeing.
