This study of a soldier, executed in pencil on paper, is a preparatory drawing for Niels Larsen Stevns’ monumental painting *Kristi Opstandelse* (Christ’s Resurrection). Created in 1923-24, it shows a soldier lying down in a foreshortened view, with additional details of his arms. The dynamic composition and expressive lines reveal Stevns’ interest in capturing the human figure in dramatic poses, preparing for the grand scale and religious theme of the final work.
