Patriotse hemelvaart 1787 - 1788

Johann Heinrich Ramberg's satirical etching "Patriotse hemelvaart" (1787-88), also known as "The Dutch Patriot's Ascension", depicts a group of Dutch Patriots attempting to launch one of their comrades into the sky with a sheet. The etching is a visual commentary on the failed Dutch Patriot uprising of 1787, mocking their efforts and suggesting their ambitions were doomed from the start. The work is held in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
