Marc Chagall made this etching, The Fox and the Bust, sometime in the 20th century. Look at how Chagall scratches into the plate, creating a whole world from tiny marks. It feels like he's just letting his hand wander, and the image appears like magic. Up close, you can almost feel the bite of the acid on the metal, the way it eats away to make those dark lines. See how the fox's fur is just a flurry of these tiny dashes? It’s as if he’s capturing not just the look of the fox, but the very essence of its slyness. I love that the bust is so solid and still, while everything around it seems to be vibrating with life. Chagall reminds me a bit of Paul Klee, always finding the fantastical in the everyday. For both of them, art isn't about perfection; it's about the joy of making and seeing where the process takes you.
