This fashion plate titled Très Parisien, 1923, No. 4, is an invitation to the fashions of the early 20s, made by an anonymous artist, and reproduced as a print. The flat planes of color and crisp lines remind me of stained glass or even cut paper, where the artist carefully laid down each shape one at a time. The green dress, with its subtle almond hue, has a calming feel, while the checked suit crackles with energy, like a jazz tune you just can’t help but tap your foot to. Look at how the artist has detailed the print with a few loose strokes of color! The beauty of this piece, for me, lies in its simplicity. There’s no attempt to disguise the hand of the artist; the marks are clear and confident. It reminds me a little of Sonia Delaunay, who used a similarly bold and playful approach to color and pattern in her own textile and fashion designs. It leaves you with a feeling that creativity is something accessible, something we can all try our hand at.
