This fashion plate, Très Parisien, was made in 1923 by an anonymous artist for a magazine. I'm thinking about the artist who made this, and I'm struck by their hand. It's so delicate and precise. They had to know all about fabrics and design to make this kind of image. What's fascinating is how they use a simple color palette to create depth and texture. It feels very modern, in a way. The flat planes of color remind me a bit of Matisse or even some early American folk art, and the way the figures are outlined gives them a graphic quality. The artist understood how to reduce forms to their essence, emphasizing shape and line over detail. There’s a real conversation happening between fashion, art, and the culture of the 1920s. It shows how ideas move around, influencing and inspiring each other.
