Curatorial notes

This bronze medal portraying Antonio Canova was created by Francesco Putinati between the late 18th and early 19th century. Notice how Canova is depicted in profile, a deliberate echo of ancient Roman portraiture. This conscious revival harkens back to the glory of antiquity. We see this in imperial coins celebrating emperors and their achievements. Yet, in Putinati's hands, it is not power that is celebrated, but artistic genius. The profile, with its sharp, clean lines, emphasizes Canova's intellect and refined taste. It is a statement about the timelessness of art and its power to transcend epochs. Through this conscious reference, the artist invites us to consider how cultural memory shapes our understanding of greatness. It’s a reminder that the past is never truly gone; it lives on, continually reinterpreted in the present.
