Curatorial notes

Zacharie Noterman created this etching, "Aap gekleed als schoenmaker jaagt twee honden weg die op schoenen bijten," which translates to "Monkey Dressed as Shoemaker Chasing Away Two Dogs Biting Shoes," sometime in the 19th century. The composition is dominated by a contrast between light and shadow that brings a theatrical quality to the scene. The monkey, positioned in the dark interior of the shoemaker's shop, is starkly juxtaposed against the lighter, outdoor setting where the dogs play. Noterman's technique emphasizes textures; from the rough fur of the animals to the coarse walls of the building, each detail is meticulously rendered. This emphasis on texture and form invites us to consider the semiotic play within the image. The monkey, dressed in human clothes, wielding a hammer, disrupts traditional hierarchies. Noterman destabilizes the established order, suggesting a world where roles are fluid and meanings are constantly negotiated. The visual structure of the artwork thus underscores a broader commentary on social roles.
