This page of calculations and notations was made by Carel Adolph Lion Cachet, probably in his studio. I love the off-white of the paper, it gives the work a feeling of standing outside of time. The tentative marks seem to dance across the page, like a choreography of thought. Look at the relationship between the ruled lines and the scribbled numbers, the carefully notated calculations and the loose, freehand annotations. The artist's hand is so present here; you can almost feel the texture of the paper and the drag of the pen across its surface. It feels like a peek inside the artist's mind. There's an intimacy in the act of sketching and note-taking, a directness that bypasses the need for resolution. Cachet's work reminds me of Cy Twombly’s, there is a similar sense of immediacy and freedom. This piece embraces ambiguity, opening up a space for multiple readings and interpretations.
