Léon Auguste Asselineau created this print of a triptych with the crucifixion of Christ sometime in the 19th century. It is an engraving on paper. The triptych is in the gothic style and features religious scenes. The central panel shows the crucifixion, with Christ on the cross. In the panels to the sides are scenes from the lives of saints. During the 1800s, Europe saw a renewed interest in Christian spirituality, and many artists depicted religious themes in their work. Asselineau’s print allows us to consider the intersection of religion, art, and society in 19th-century Europe. While ostensibly about faith, there is also a commentary on power structures within the Church, as well as traditional gender roles as seen in the representations of Mary. The work is not merely a replication; it is an interpretation that invites reflection on tradition, faith, and the human condition.
