This 1536 silver medal by Wolf Milicz depicts Johan Frederik, the Elector of Saxony, on one side and a heraldic scene on the other. Measuring only 4.4 cm in diameter, the small but detailed work is a prime example of Renaissance portraiture and heraldry. The use of the medal format was common during the Renaissance to celebrate and commemorate significant figures. The obverse of the medal shows Johan Frederik with a beard and wearing a fur-lined robe, while the reverse shows a depiction of his coat of arms.
