Toshi Yoshida made this dreamy print, Somewhere, at some point in his career, and it’s a real testament to the magic of black ink on paper. The piece has this gorgeous, fluid quality, like watching ink bloom in water. Yoshida's mark-making feels intuitive. It's like he let the medium lead the way, embracing the unpredictable nature of printmaking. There’s this sense of play, a willingness to let go and see what happens. I'm drawn to the contrasting textures: the soft, blurry edges against the sharp, stippled areas. Those fine, delicate lines almost feel like they’re breathing, creating this incredible sense of depth and atmosphere. It makes you wonder about the kind of tools Yoshida used, maybe a fine brush or even some kind of blotting technique. Yoshida's work reminds me a bit of Odilon Redon’s prints, this similar embrace of the mysterious and the surreal. And like Redon, Yoshida invites us to wander into a space that exists somewhere between the seen and the unseen.
