Curatorial notes

This photograph by Brainich & Leusink depicts an unknown couple adorned with crowns. Note the cross atop the man’s crown, a symbol of divine authority and sovereignty, echoing ancient rulers who claimed their right to power was granted by God. The crown, a potent symbol of power, transcends time and place. Consider the laurel wreaths of Roman emperors or the elaborate headdresses of Egyptian pharaohs – all variations on this theme. Each society imbues the crown with its own specific cultural and religious significance. Thinkers like Carl Jung might suggest that the crown resonates with our collective unconscious, tapping into archetypal desires for order, control, and reverence. Observe the emotional weight the crowns carry. This image has a powerful, almost unsettling quality, engaging us on a subconscious level. Symbols like the crown are never fixed; they evolve, resurface, and take on new meanings in different historical contexts.
