This “Lucky Cabin” still bank was made by John Wright, sometime in the early twentieth century. It's cast iron, and you can see the process in the object itself. The repeated marks on the roof give it a grid-like structure, but the paint job softens things. The red and brown hues make me think of wood and earth, of being in nature. The materiality is what grabs me; the iron gives it weight. I want to hold it in my hand and feel the cool metal and see the way the light hits the surface. Notice the texture of the logs. You can imagine the form being made in clay, then cast. It reminds me of Joseph Cornell's boxes – these precious miniature worlds, heavy with meaning and nostalgia. It's like a little poem, a reminder of simpler times and childhood dreams.
