This photograph shows a gallery with furniture in a house on Sumatra, and way in the back, Gerda Bergsma. It’s another one of these anonymous images, which makes me think about the person behind the camera, their intentions, and what they chose to capture. The composition is fascinating – we're looking at an interior space, but it opens onto a lush, tropical world, mixing inside and out. The furniture is heavy and dark. You can almost feel the humidity in the air, the weight of the atmosphere. There’s a table in the foreground, draped with a white cloth, a little lamp perched on top. It's a focal point. Is this meant to be a stage? A space for conversation or contemplation? What I find most compelling is the ambiguity. It’s the kind of piece that reminds me of a Bonnard interior, or maybe even a Gerhard Richter painting – a glimpse into a world that's both familiar and utterly strange. In the end, it’s a reminder that art is an open question, a space for endless interpretations.
