Note the stark juxtaposition of light and shadow, delineating the figures. Observe how the composition directs our gaze: the stark white papers held by the figures pull us into the geometric relationships amongst them and with the rigid table they occupy. Editor: I see what you mean about the papers. Do you think the fact that there's four figures with rigid contours is important to note when it comes to decoding the work? Curator: Precisely. Four figures tightly bound within a compressed pictorial space. How does this confinement affect your interpretation? Does the arrangement evoke a sense of tension or perhaps forced intimacy? Editor: I definitely see tension there. Maybe it’s the rigid body language and limited palette that really bring out those feelings for me. Curator: The artist restricts the palette. Crimson dominates and sets a singular emotive tonality to the subjects rendered. Black, the most absolute value on the tonal scale is reserved for sartorial expression. This contrast in colour weight intensifies the visual drama. A symbolic discourse in color use is apparent here. Would you not agree?
