"Lake George, A Reminiscence" was created by John Frederick Kensett using oil on canvas. Kensett built his reputation crafting scenic views. These painters would haul their materials out to a location and paint *en plein air*, or ‘in the open air.’ Looking at the picture, we see brushstrokes that are quite evident throughout, and that gives the painting a sense of vibrancy and movement. You can sense the time that Kensett dedicated to observing the tranquil scene. The layering of the paint is also a testament to his skill as a painter. Back then, landscapes were extremely popular as they aligned with a growing national consciousness and appreciation for the American terrain. Though this work does not include people, there are underlying stories around labor and politics tied to the landscape. Considering materials, process, and context allows us to deepen our appreciation for how the artist’s engagement with nature reflects broader issues of society.
