This drawing on paper, simply titled ‘Blanket’, uses colored pencil and graphite. The artist, who remains anonymous, used these materials to suggest a design for a blanket, and it is fascinating. The piece has a pale, delicate surface, almost like a faded memory. The graphite lines give a subtle sheen, especially in the geometric patterns at the top and bottom. Look at the central motif of the mask, the way the colored pencil is used is almost like a watercolor wash, bleeding into the paper, giving the mask a kind of ethereal presence. The texture isn't just visual; you can almost feel the soft give of the blanket, the way it might feel against your skin. It puts me in mind of Hilma af Klint, whose work wasn't seen for a long time, but whose language of symbols has become so recognizable. Art is an ongoing conversation, after all, where meanings shift and nothing is ever truly set in stone.
