Looking at the print we can see, in the foreground on the left, two horses drinking. Next to them stands a dark-skinned figure, while a man with a dog walks on the right side of the frame. Given the time period, the presence of the dark-skinned figure raises questions about social hierarchies and power dynamics. Were they enslaved or free? What were the terms of their labor? The inn could have been a social hub, but it also may have been a site of exclusion. The artist has left us with an image of a fleeting moment, but it also reveals a complex web of social, economic, and racial relationships.
