This print, Figuren en boerenkarren bij een herberg, depicts figures and farm carts by an inn and was made by an anonymous artist. Looking at the print we can see, in the foreground on the left, two horses drinking. Next to them stands a dark-skinned figure, while a man with a dog walks on the right side of the frame. Given the time period, the presence of the dark-skinned figure raises questions about social hierarchies and power dynamics. Were they enslaved or free? What were the terms of their labor? The inn could have been a social hub, but it also may have been a site of exclusion. The artist has left us with an image of a fleeting moment, but it also reveals a complex web of social, economic, and racial relationships.
