Paul Joseph Constantin Gabriël made this drawing, “Train in a Polder Landscape,” with graphite. Born in the Netherlands in 1828, Gabriël came of age during a time of great social change and industrial expansion. Here, the artist presents a landscape bisected by a long road. Our eyes are led towards the horizon, drawn by the rhythm of telegraph poles marching into the distance. On the left, we see the mark of modernity – a train billowing smoke, a symbol of progress transforming the land. Yet, this sense of forward momentum is tempered by the quiet stillness of the scene. The soft, muted tones and delicate lines evoke a feeling of nostalgia. Gabriël captures a moment of transition, where the old agrarian ways meet the new industrial age, prompting us to contemplate our ever-evolving relationship with the world around us.
