Editor: This is Alexander Cozens’ "Wooded Landscape, Waterfall to Right," currently residing at the Tate Collections. It's a simple sketch, but the composition is rather interesting. What do you see in its formal arrangement? Curator: Note how Cozens articulates depth. The foreground is delineated by bolder, more defined lines, gradually lightening as the eye moves toward the background. The "blot" technique is evident, creating a sense of organic form without rigid precision. Editor: So, the texture almost defines the space itself? Curator: Precisely. The very materiality of the drawing, its lines and shading, constructs our perception of spatial recession and atmospheric perspective. Editor: That’s fascinating. Thanks for helping me look closer. Curator: My pleasure. It is always rewarding to revisit the fundamentals.
