Norman Lewis made this untitled work with ink on paper, and it feels like a glimpse into a busy, bustling world. The drawing is all about the line, a sort of frenetic energy of marks, each one seemingly searching for its place. I can almost feel Lewis' hand moving across the paper, deciding and then rediciding as he goes. There's this figure near the bottom – is he lying down, dancing, or falling? The beauty here is in the ambiguity, the way the marks suggest multiple possibilities at once. It reminds me a little of Guston, or maybe even Twombly, in the sense of embracing the awkward, the unresolved. It’s a reminder that art doesn’t always have to be about answers; sometimes, it’s more interesting to revel in the questions. It's in this spirit that art becomes not just a statement, but an ongoing conversation.
