Gudrun Traustedt created "Landscape with Net Fisherman, Florence" as a drawing using pencil on paper. The linear composition, with its spare use of graphite, sketches out a landscape under a pale sky. The grid of the paper support is visible and becomes enmeshed into the composition. The scene depicts a lone figure, presumably the fisherman, standing along a shoreline. The figure is rendered with just a few lines, yet we gather a sense of the scene through his gestures. The landscape itself is suggested rather than defined, with broad strokes indicating the terrain. Traustedt is less interested in representing the scene photographically and more interested in capturing the essence of the landscape. There is a tension here between what is shown and what is left unsaid. Traustedt challenges our perceptions of space and representation, hinting at a world beyond what is immediately visible.
