This photograph of the tower of Saint Steven's Church in Werkhoven, was made at some point by an anonymous photographer using a sepia-toned process. Look at the way the light falls on the brickwork, softening the edges and giving a real sense of age and history. The sepia tone really lends itself to a feeling of nostalgia. You can almost feel the weight of time in those bricks, like a silent witness to centuries of change, a bit like some of Gerhard Richter's photo paintings. Photography can be a real process of discovery. You aim the lens, choose your moment, and then the chemical magic happens to reveal the image. It’s about capturing a moment and transforming it into something lasting and, in this case, something that invites us to contemplate the past. It reminds me that art is really about showing us different ways of seeing.
