Robert Mangold made 'X Within X Orange' with paint on canvas. The piece seems so simple, but I bet it took a lot of adjustments to get it just right. You know, nudging that orange X around, making sure it sits just so on the canvas. I wonder if he was thinking about color theory, or maybe he just liked orange that day. The thin lines cutting through the X add a kind of subtle tension, don't they? It's like he's dissecting the form, asking us to really see it. Mangold's work reminds me of other minimalists who were also trying to strip things down to their essence. It’s as if all these artists are in a conversation across time. Painting is a space of endless possibilities, right? It embraces the maybe, the what if. There’s no one way to see it, and that’s the beauty of it.
