This untitled work on paper was made by the contemporary Ukrainian artist Alevtyna Kakhidze. It combines text and image to offer a powerful commentary on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The drawing juxtaposes the bold assertion that 'the left around the world needs to unite' with the stark message 'No to the Russian invasion of Ukraine'. The image depicts figures pushing a container marked with the colors of the Russian flag. Made in response to the invasion, the drawing reflects the artist’s political views, but it also grapples with the complexities of global politics, questioning the role and influence of leftist movements in the face of aggression. To fully understand the work, research on the history of leftist movements in Europe might be enlightening. By considering the social and political context, we can better understand the artist's critique and its place within contemporary discourse on conflict, power, and resistance.
