This is the title page for funeral poems, made by François van Bleyswijck, in the late 17th or early 18th century. It's an etching, meaning that the design was incised into a metal plate, which was then inked and printed. You can see the crisp, precise lines that are characteristic of this process. Etching was a printmaking technique that allowed for intricate details and delicate shading, and was extremely popular at the time. In this example, the artist’s mastery is evident in the symmetrical composition and decorative elements, with the weeping figures, skull and crossbones, and the solemn inscription space. While seemingly a world away from the digital technologies we use today, etching, like all printmaking, represents a step toward mechanical reproduction of images, which has hugely impacted our culture. The ability to replicate and distribute images widely has social, political, and economic ramifications that are still being felt today. By understanding the process, we gain insight into the cultural values and technological advancements of the time, and how they are connected to our own.
