This is a drawing of "Avance" stationaire & scheepsmotoren, by Reijer Stolk, made with brush and pen in ink. It's this bold graphic statement, so stark, so immediate. The black ink sits thick in places, almost like it's been built up in layers. The texture, though subtle, hints at the artist's hand, the pressure and drag of the brush and pen. This isn't about hiding the process; it’s about celebrating the materiality of the medium. Look at the way the light catches the edges of those solid black shapes, how that contrast creates a kind of vibration, a visual hum. It reminds me a little of some of the Constructivist graphics, but with a playful, almost naive twist. There’s a conversation happening here, across time and styles, a back-and-forth between precision and spontaneity. Isn’t that what art is all about, after all?
