This engraving of the Virgin and Child with Musical Angels was made by Jan Wierix in the late 16th century. Note the Christ Child holding an orb. This is no mere child’s plaything, but a symbol of earthly power and dominion. The orb reminds us of the Roman emperors, who were often depicted holding a globe, signifying their rule over the world. As Christianity absorbed elements of the Roman Empire, this symbol was recontextualized. In medieval and Renaissance art, Christ holding the orb signifies his role as Salvator Mundi, the savior of the world. This motif can be found in countless images across Europe, each reflecting the complex dance between religious belief and political power. The image is a powerful reminder of how symbols evolve, adapt, and are continuously reinterpreted throughout history, engaging us on a subconscious level with their enduring presence. The symbols are not static; they transform, accumulating layers of meaning as they journey through time.
