Niels Larsen Stevns sketched this small drawing of Christ healing a leper with ink on paper. Those fine dark lines. They build a whole world here; the sparse but evocative foliage, the figures, the action. What was Stevns thinking as he sketched this out? I imagine him lost in thought, trying to capture the essence of the biblical scene with as few lines as possible. I feel for the artist, trying to communicate something so meaningful, so ineffable, with just a few strokes of a pen. It's a challenge every artist faces. There’s a dance between the artist's hand and the story they're trying to tell, like Philip Guston and his simple shapes. There is always an ongoing conversation happening between artists. I'm sure Stevns was inspired by countless artists before him. His drawing is a testament to how much can be communicated with such simple, raw materials.
