Curatorial notes

Isaac Israels made this sketch, 'Standing Woman with Hat' with pencil on paper, and it's all about the energy of the line. You can see the decisions being made, the artist feeling out the form, like he's thinking right onto the page. The texture is immediate, raw, and you can see the pressure of the pencil in those dark, scribbled areas versus the light, tentative strokes that define the figure's outline. Look at the hat, how it's both there and not there, a suggestion more than a solid object. It reminds me a bit of Degas, that interest in capturing a fleeting moment, a casual pose. It is as if Israels is exploring how much he can leave out, how little information he needs to convey the essence of a figure. Art isn't about answers, it's about the questions it provokes, the conversations it starts, don't you think?
